What’s happening at the Cambridge Food Bank?

It has been one week since we have had to change how we do things here at the Cambridge Food Bank. While we wish we never had to make these changes, we know this is what’s best for our community, our staff and our volunteers. Our regular scheduled programs are still suspended at this time. This also includes all of our volunteers. Mike’s Lunch will continue to run, but as a grab-and-go style lunch.

Co-op

Starting Monday March 23, 2020 Co-op will also be suspended. Co-op members will be able to access an emergency hamper once a week. These hampers will be available at 54 Ainslie St. South.

Hampers

Emergency hampers are available to be picked up once a week. During this time you do not need to provide identification or proof of income. Our hours for pick up will continue as follows;

Monday          12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Tuesday          12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Wednesday   12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Thursday        12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Friday              12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

If you are in need of a hamper but are not able to pick it up yourself, please send a family member, friend or a neighbour. This is especially important for elderly or immune compromised individuals. When picking up a hamper, please provide us with your name and number of people in your family. We ask that you please stay behind the tables that have been set up and grab your hamper and go. We are trying to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has come together to support us, it has really shown us how strong this beautiful community is! We want to give a huge shout out to some local restaurants that have donated to us.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Announcement

We are at a critical time for the containment of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

As a necessary precaution to protect staff, volunteers and members, The Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank (CSHFB) will be shifting resources away from community programming and towards food distribution only starting Monday, March 16, 2020.

  • The Community Pantry will offer pre-packed hampers.
  • The Co-op will offer pre-packed hampers for the week of March 16th , the program will then be temporarily suspended.
  • Mike’s Lunch, will continue to run. However, this program will transition from a seated meal service to a takeaway meal model.
  • Volunteers are asked to stay home.

All other programs and services at the CSHFB will be temporarily suspended until further notice. We will advertise any changes in our services on our website, on our social media accounts, our general voicemail, and at our 54 Ainslie St. S location.

To keep our workplace healthy throughout this period, our staff are following strict precautionary measures such as frequent hand washing, continually sterilizing our work environments, and social distancing.

In times like these, vulnerable community members need our support the most.

  • To self-isolate yourself, you need adequate housing.
  • To take a sick day, you need to know you’ll get to keep your job.
  • To stockpile food and supplies, you need to be able to afford these essentials in the first place.

Thank you, as always, for standing with the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank. Now more than ever, we need your support.

One Seed, One Community

How one little seed can help a family in need!

Gardening is a past time that many of us do for relaxation. But did you know that, that relaxing hobby can actually help a community member in need? One Seed, One Community was developed based on the idea of giving back. The chosen seed of the year is the ‘Provider’ bean. This bean is bountiful and one of the earlier producers in your summer harvest.

Join us on Saturday, February 22, 2020, along with rare Charitable Research Reserve, Seeds of Diversity and Idea Exchange as we launch One Seed, One Community. Join us at 435 King Street East, Cambridge from 2:30pm-3:30pm and enjoy musical performances, participate in family fun and pick up your free pack of beans.

Help us reach our goal of 4,000 packets of bean seeds distributed over the 2020 season. If you can’t make it out to the event you can pick up your free seeds at the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank.

So grab your friends, and family and start growing your beans! Don’t worry, if you end up with an overwhelming amount we will gladly take any donations! We are always looking for donations of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Cameron Dearlove stepping down as Executive Director

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Board of Directors announces Cameron Dearlove has chosen to depart as Executive Director of Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, effective February 19, 2020.

Since May 2018 Cameron has played a critical role in the development, modernization, and success of the organization. He has worked tirelessly to provide outstanding support and resources for the Cambridge and North Dumfries community, and while we will miss him and his inspiring leadership, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

Over the next few months, we will be conducting a search to find a new Executive Director. During this transition period, Dianne McLeod will continue in the role of Interim Executive Director.

We cannot thank Cameron enough for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm, and motivation he has given the Cambridge Food Bank. He will be greatly missed by the staff, Board, members, and partners alike.

Everyday Kindness

Kindness and generosity come in many different forms in our community. Sometimes, these gifts of the heart are easy to see. We can take a photo with hundreds of pounds of donated food or with a big cheque representing a donation of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it is easy to miss the everyday kindness that helps make the Cambridge Food Bank so much more than a food bank.

I have a unique role here, as Spiritual Care Provider at the Cambridge Food Bank. I often describe myself as one of the official listeners and watchers. Much of what I watch for is how people are doing. In the midst of people struggling with food insecurity comes a whole host of other complications. When I see, as I often do, times of tremendous kindness and compassionate I want to tell people of my very positive experience. Please accept the two following stories as a gift of pure generosity seen recently at the Food Bank.

Holding HandsThe first occasion I saw in the waiting area of the Community Pantry. An elderly gentleman had ask me for an application for the recently announced Dental Program for seniors. Even before I realized that he would need help in reading and filling in the application, the young woman sitting beside him offered to read it to him and fill it in for him. They did not know each other.  When realizing that he was going to be helped he thanked her profusely.

The second act of everyday kindness was one that again happened in the reception area. It was a bitterly cold day. I had been speaking with an Indigenous Elder. As we moved to give people more space we realized that we stood next to a woman from the Middle East. My Indigenous friend observed that this woman had no gloves and she had just come in from the cold. Although the woman from the Middle East has very little English my friend took her hands and held them to give them warmth. Then she took her gloves out of her pocket and gave them to the woman. In reflecting back to this experience I realized that I was standing in the presence of an Indigenous Elder, a new Immigrant, and myself, a Settler. The very foundations of Canada. Each one recognizing the great gift of everyday kindness. How blessed we are.

June Anderson,

Spiritual Care Provider.
