Sponsor a Holiday Meal Today!

Like many things, COVID has played a role in how things are operating and functioning this year. At the CSHFB we have seen an increase in people accessing our services, with many of these people using our Food Bank for the first time due to a lost job in the family and sometimes even both partners losing their job. With that being said we are forecasting for one of our busiest holiday seasons yet. We are expecting 1,500 people from Cambridge and North Dumfries to come through our doors to collect a holiday meal.

To meet demand and keep everyone as safe as possible we will be switching how our hampers are usually distributed. In past years we have provided a holiday meal hamper, this year we will be providing a protein (turkey, halal meat) and a grocery gift card with a value based on the number of people in the family.

Christmas 2020

Now, more than ever, we need support from our community members. You can provide support in three ways;

  1. Donation of a protein (turkey, halal meat)
  2. Grocery gift cards in the increments of $25
  3. Monetary donation

You can make a monetary donation by;

  • Calling, 519-622-6550 and providing your credit card number

From everyone at the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, we thank you for your kindness and generosity! May you have a happy, blessed, and safe holiday season.

Your Monthly Food Bank Update!

During this pandemic things have been uncertain and changing daily but, one things has stayed the same,how generous this beautiful community is. We continue to see the support and dedication the community has to helping one another and it truly is amazing.

As an essential service we are continuously sanitizing and cleaning our facility to ensure our dedicated staff stay healthy.

We wanted to give a couple reminders on our operations at 54 Ainslie St. S.

  • Our hours still remain Monday to Friday 12:00PM-4:30PM.
  • Hampers are designed so you only need to come once a week.
  • You do not need to provide any paperwork or identification. We ask your name and how many people are in your family.
  • We will place your hamper on the tables located outside of our front door. You can pick up your hamper from the table, this allows everyone to stay at a safe distance.
  • Tape has been placed on the sidewalk, use this as a guide to distance yourself.
  • If you are feeling unwell, have a compromised immune system or feel uncomfortable going out in public, you may have someone pick up a hamper on your behalf.
  • All programs remain suspended until further notice.
  • Mike’s Lunch is still operating but as a come-and-go lunch.

Our annual Spring Food & Fund Drive is still running, with one slight change, we have gone virtual!  With the current situation we are facing we are seeing an increase in demand at the CSHFB, making this Spring Food & Fund Drive that much more important! If you choose to donate food we ask that you drop the food off at your local grocery store. This allows us to limit the amount of people coming in to our building and limiting the contact we have with other people. If you prefer to donate through a monetary donation we except donations through Canada Helps. Canada Helps is an online platform that allows you to donate through the comfort of your own home. We also can accept monetary donations in the form of a cheque. Cheques can be made out to Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank and mailed to 54 Ainslie St. South, Cambridge ON. N1R3K3

Our volunteer program is still suspended at this time. However April 19-25th was National Volunteer Week and we did not forget about you. We weren’t able to celebrate our hardworking and dedicated volunteers like we normally do but we were thinking of you and we can’t wait for the day to see all of your smiling faces again! Without your outstanding commitment we would not be able to provide the programming that we do for the community!

For updates on the status of the CSHFB and the status of our programs, follow us on social media.

From everyone at the CSHFB we send our best wishes to you and those you love. Stay safe.

What’s happening at the Cambridge Food Bank?

It has been one week since we have had to change how we do things here at the Cambridge Food Bank. While we wish we never had to make these changes, we know this is what’s best for our community, our staff and our volunteers. Our regular scheduled programs are still suspended at this time. This also includes all of our volunteers. Mike’s Lunch will continue to run, but as a grab-and-go style lunch.

Co-op

Starting Monday March 23, 2020 Co-op will also be suspended. Co-op members will be able to access an emergency hamper once a week. These hampers will be available at 54 Ainslie St. South.

Hampers

Emergency hampers are available to be picked up once a week. During this time you do not need to provide identification or proof of income. Our hours for pick up will continue as follows;

Monday          12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Tuesday          12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Wednesday   12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Thursday        12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Friday              12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

If you are in need of a hamper but are not able to pick it up yourself, please send a family member, friend or a neighbour. This is especially important for elderly or immune compromised individuals. When picking up a hamper, please provide us with your name and number of people in your family. We ask that you please stay behind the tables that have been set up and grab your hamper and go. We are trying to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Announcement

We are at a critical time for the containment of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

As a necessary precaution to protect staff, volunteers and members, The Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank (CSHFB) will be shifting resources away from community programming and towards food distribution only starting Monday, March 16, 2020.

  • The Community Pantry will offer pre-packed hampers.
  • The Co-op will offer pre-packed hampers for the week of March 16th , the program will then be temporarily suspended.
  • Mike’s Lunch, will continue to run. However, this program will transition from a seated meal service to a takeaway meal model.
  • Volunteers are asked to stay home.

All other programs and services at the CSHFB will be temporarily suspended until further notice. We will advertise any changes in our services on our website, on our social media accounts, our general voicemail, and at our 54 Ainslie St. S location.

To keep our workplace healthy throughout this period, our staff are following strict precautionary measures such as frequent hand washing, continually sterilizing our work environments, and social distancing.

In times like these, vulnerable community members need our support the most.

  • To self-isolate yourself, you need adequate housing.
  • To take a sick day, you need to know you’ll get to keep your job.
  • To stockpile food and supplies, you need to be able to afford these essentials in the first place.

Thank you, as always, for standing with the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank. Now more than ever, we need your support.

Gleaning

Do You Have a Fruit Tree You Need Harvested?

Our garden volunteers will come harvest your fruit tree, garden, or field and donate the food to the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank!

By harvesting your fruit tree, or ‘Gleaning’, our volunteers will collect food before it is wasted and share it with people in your community!

Like traditional gleaning, 1/3 is offered to the donor, 1/3 is given to the volunteers, and 1/3 is given to the Food Bank.

Are you interested in getting involved? Get in touch:  fgrevers@cambridgefoodbank.on.ca
