When school ends for the summer, many families lose access to breakfast and lunch programs children rely on during the school year. While these programs help support nutrition and reduce household food costs, that support disappears over the summer months.

For families already facing rising food prices, rent, and other essential expenses, this creates a significant gap at home. More meals are needed each week, but household budgets often do not change.

The Cambridge Food Bank is launching its annual School’s Out, Summer is Not Campaign to help bridge that gap and ensure local children and families continue to have access to nutritious food during the summer months.

Within the first five months of 2026, the Food Bank has supported 2,747 children, a 9% increase compared to the same period last year, reflecting continued pressure on households across Cambridge and North Dumfries. Last year, the Food Bank supported 10,717 individuals, including 3,470 children under 18, highlighting the scale of ongoing community need.

This sustained demand shows that food insecurity continues to impact a significant number of households locally, particularly those with children, who are more affected when school-based supports are not available.

Behind every visit is a family doing their best to manage rising costs while making sure food is on the table. Summer can be one of the most challenging times of year for families who already rely on food support services.

We are asking the community to come together and help fill this gap. Donations support the purchase of fresh and nutritious food for children, families, and individuals throughout the summer months

Every dollar stays local and directly supports neighbours in Cambridge and North Dumfries.

Together, the community can help ensure that no child goes hungry during the summer months.
